From Student to Stylist to Salon Manager

Catie’s career is on the fast track. “I started as a receptionist on the weekends while I was in cosmetology school and, once I graduated and got my license, I was hired as a stylist. In February 2025 – 22 months from when I started at the salon – I was promoted to salon manager.”

Professional learning and growth have been a big part of Catie’s Great Clips journey. Working for a franchisee who owns and operates 13 Great Clips® salons in Nevada, Catie has had the opportunity to focus on developing her skills. “I essentially learned how to cut hair at Great Clips,” she said. “It’s where I’ve gained all my confidence as a stylist.”

During her early days as a new stylist, Catie struggled with efficiency. “I wasn’t sure about all of my haircuts and didn’t know how much autonomy I should have,” she said.

That’s where training came in. Every new stylist at a Great Clips® salon is required to complete a combination of online and live, virtual training that demonstrates how to deliver a great customer experience, the Great Clips cutting and clipper systems, and salon operations. Additional, optional trainings feature titles such as “Clipper Academy” and “Advanced Techniques and Trends.”

“Once I got more confident in my haircuts, I felt ready and motivated to build a career with Great Clips. Now that I’m a manager, I can see myself with Great Clips long-term.”

A big contributor to Catie’s job satisfaction is the people around her. “I love our customers, and I have an amazing franchisee and general manager who take great care of me and my staff,” Catie said. “But I think the best part of my day is my team. They are incredible people and cheerleaders. They truly are my friends and make it easy to show up for work every day.”

Catie acknowledges that there are other salon models and options available in her area, but she says she’s landed in a great spot for work-life balance. “Great Clips is lucrative, and the customers keep coming in all day! There’s no need for me to post on social media to get new customers or respond to customer messages after I clock out.”

Beyond the built-in customer base, Catie says career mobility is another important reason she enjoys Great Clips. “You can hit big career dreams with Great Clips. You can start off cutting hair, move up to a salon manager or general manager role."

When asked if she has any career tips for new stylists, Catie offered, “Great Clips is a wonderful place to get comfortable with consultations and delivering haircuts to a full range of customers. I would highly recommend starting your career at a Great Clips salon.”
